Celebrating 40 Years of Wings
In 1986, the Sisters of Providence and a group of concerned citizens recognized a critical gap in services for women and children fleeing family violence. Together, they shared a vision of creating a safe place where families could begin again.
That vision became Wings.
Over the past four decades, Wings has grown and evolved alongside the needs of the community. What began as a small second-stage shelter has become a continuum of care that includes safe housing, supportive housing, childcare, youth programming, counselling, outreach services, and innovative programs that help families move from crisis to lasting independence.
Since opening our doors, more than 6,000 women and children have found safety, healing, and hope through Wings.
A Look Back
1986
The Sisters of Providence and community advocates come together to establish Wings, creating a vision for long-term support for women and children rebuilding their lives after family violence.
1987
Wings opens its first 12-unit second-stage shelter, providing families with the time, safety, and support needed to begin healing.
2003
A new purpose-built 20-unit shelter opens, allowing Wings to support more women and children on their journey toward independence.
2012
The Home Next Door opens, adding supportive housing and creating new opportunities for families to build long-term stability.
2014
Rocky Forest Daycare opens onsite, helping remove barriers for mothers while providing children with a safe and nurturing environment.
2025–2026
The Landing, The Nest, the Community Market, and the Family Wellness & Empowerment Program are introduced, creating new spaces and opportunities for connection, healing, and support.
Forty years later, the need for Wings remains as important as ever.
Each year, more than 300 women and children turn to Wings for safety, healing, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives after family violence.
Today, Wings provides 50 safe homes, along with childcare, youth programming, counselling, outreach services, and family-centred supports designed to help families move from crisis to lasting independence.
Because of this support, 98% of families served do not return to abusive situations.
As we look ahead, Wings continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the families we serve.
In 2026, Wings introduced the Family Wellness & Empowerment Program (FWEP), a new unified model that strengthens pathways to safety, healing, and independence through coordinated, family-centred supports.
