Position Summary

The Youth Worker supports the delivery of summer programming for children and youth ages six to eighteen and contributes to a safe, welcoming and organized environment for families who have experienced family violence. This role combines youth program leadership with facility support that strengthens the daily functioning of WINGS and enhances the experience of families living on site.

Key Responsibilities

1. Support Trauma Informed Youth Programming

  • Build trusting and respectful relationships with youth through calm and consistent interactions

  • Respond to behaviours with compassion and an understanding of trauma responses

  • Encourage participation in activities that support confidence, creativity and emotional wellbeing

  • Model positive communication and healthy social skills

2. Assist in Planning and Delivering Daily Summer Activities

  • Help prepare and lead recreational activities, arts and crafts, sports and group games

  • Assist with planning and supervising field trips, park outings and special activity days

  • Support the preparation of snacks and special lunches

  • Ensure all activities promote safety, inclusion and a sense of belonging

3. Lead and Support Special Event Days

  • Assist with organizing theme days such as Canada Day, Outdoor Adventure Day, Petting Zoo Day, Civic Holiday celebrations and other summer events

  • Support set up, clean up and smooth transitions throughout the day

  • Help create a warm and joyful atmosphere for youth and their families

4. Maintain Safe and Inclusive Program Spaces

  • Help keep youth program areas clean, organized and stocked with supplies

  • Support the maintenance of sports equipment, art materials and activity bins

  • Follow all WINGS safety procedures and provincial guidelines

  • Observe youth wellbeing and bring concerns to the Youth Program Coordinator

5. Provide Positive Mentorship and Role Modelling

  • Offer encouragement and guidance to youth as they develop social and emotional skills

  • Promote cooperation, respect and healthy peer relationships

  • Celebrate youth achievements and support resilience building

  • Help create a sense of community within the group

6. Collaborate with WINGS Staff Teams

  • Work closely with the Youth Program Coordinator, Early Childhood Educators and the Family Wellness Team

  • Participate in training, planning meetings and reflective learning

  • Communicate respectfully with caregivers and staff to support coordinated care

7. Facility Support Responsibilities

Alongside youth programming, the Youth Worker will provide support to the Facility Coordinator to ensure that the building remains safe, welcoming and well prepared for families. Tasks may include:

  • Assisting with apartment preparation for incoming families, including cleaning, replenishing supplies and creating welcome packages

  • Helping with basic organization of storage spaces, program materials and supply rooms

  • Supporting the operation of the WINGS donation program by sorting, organizing and distributing clothing and household donations

  • Helping maintain tidy and accessible common areas used by children and youth

  • Assisting with small tasks that help create a warm and dignified environment for families who are starting over

8. Assist with Documentation and Program Support

  • Help maintain attendance records and activity notes

  • Support basic reporting needed for program evaluation and CSJ requirements

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times

9. Professional Learning and Skill Development

  • Demonstrate reliability, initiative and a willingness to learn

  • Participate in training on trauma informed practice, cultural safety and youth development

  • Seek guidance when needed and reflect on skills throughout the placement

Eligibility Requirements

‍ ‍Applicants must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment period

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person with refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
